So we've achieved steadiness and ease in asana, now what?
One way of measuring our progress in our yoga practice is the awareness we increasingly experience. We know in theory that Body, Breath and Mind are inseparable, but how does this work on an experiential level?
If we can become more sensitive in our yoga practice, then with skill we can relax, both generally and within asana, allowing a greater awareness of our breathing to take place. Then, using yoga movement and posture gently and sensitively we can discover that each asana has a very different effect on our breathing. Instead of seeing asana as a means to stretch, we can learn to use it as an aid to opening up to, and increasing awareness of, our breathing.
Working like this we can develop our understanding of asana as a way of leading us into experiencing the subtleties of the breath; this in turn leads the way into pranayama. It is the subtlety and nuance of pranayama, which then paves the way to deep relaxation and ultimately to meditation.
We will explore this using Patanjali Sutras 2:49 to 2:53 as a starting point.
Bram Williams teaches yoga in West London. His own daily yoga practice has evolved over the years into a subtle, meditative approach to asana with a large emphasis on pranayama as a lead into seated meditation. He studied in mindfulness, and both Shamatha and Vipassana meditation in Northern India as well as studying with teachers from the Himalayan Institute in America.

This IST event will cover why we need to adjust students, how to identify main problem areas and how to observe and adjust these areas in asana.
Richard has been teaching for about 25 years. He has practised yoga mainly in the Iyengar and Ashtanga methods and has developed his teaching and practice to try and get the best out of both systems. He has taught classes ranging from antenatal yoga, children, mental health to Ashtanga Yoga. Richard is a teacher trainer with the British Wheel of Yoga.
He has a keen interest in yoga philosophy, religion and psychology, and how this effects the way we live and practice. He balances traditional yoga ideas and an emphasis on practice that grounds the students in his classes with a sense of fun.
